Year - 1 Holly - Miss Phillips and Mrs Gavin

Welcome to Year 1 - Holly!

Class Teacher: Miss Phillips and Mrs Gavin

Class Teaching Assistant: Mrs Ward - Brickett
Midday Supervisor: Mrs Johnston

During the Summer Term, Reception children visit their Year 1 classes on a number of occassions. This is to provide the children with opportunities to familiarise themselves with their new teacher and teaching assistant, the classroom routines and layout.

Children are provided a mid morning snack of fresh fruit or vegetables and milk or water. Playtime is from 10.30 am to 10.50 am and is supervised by two members of staff, with two additional members of staff on first aid duty.

Lunchtime break is from 12 o'clock until 1.10 pm where the children are supervised by Mid-day Supervisors.

In Year 1 we build on the children's Active Learning Skills by encouraging them to use the environment to find things out for themselves.  The learning tasks are mostly directed by the teacher.

As parents you will notice a difference between the Reception and Year 1 classrooms. In Year 1, there is a chair and table place for each child.  The children sit and work in different places depending on what we are doing. Teaching is on a whole class basis and the children work on a task at their own level. The children have morning and lunchtime play on the playground and have supervised use of the Key Stage 1 climbing frame.

Statutory Assessments in Year 1
In June the children will take an individual phonics test to access their progress. This will include real and nonsense words.

Reading Books In Miss Fitzgerald's class school reading books are changed once on a Friday, three books will be given. Regrettably we are unable to change school reading books until the previous books have been returned and the green reading book is signed.
Library Books All children have the opportunity to go to the school library to choose a book to take home. Please ensure that your child brings their library book to school on this day. Regrettably we are unable to issue a new library book until the previous weeks book has been returned.
P.E. Days Our indoor P.E. day is Wednesday and our outdoor P.E. day is Friday. P.E. kits should be kept in school at all times. We will send them home over the school holidays. Long hair needs to be tied back and earings are not allowed to be worn in school at any time. It would be helpful if girls could have a pair of white ankle socks in their PE bag for the days they come to school wearing tights.
Morning Routine When children arrive in the morning they are expected to say goodbye to their parents at the classroom door and come into the classroom, being greeted by the teacher. The children then change out of their coats and outdoor shoes, putting away their book bags, water bottles and lunch boxes. Once their belongings are away the children go to their places where they can read a book or continue with work on their desk. At 9:00 the classroom door is closed and registration is taken, finishing with morning prayer. Any child arriving after 9:00 must enter school through the Main Reception Area where a late slip must be completed.

We will always strive to maintain these routines. However, on rare occasions, circumstances prevent us from following them exactly.
