Geography

How is Geography a sacred subject?

Geography enables all learners to experience the beauty, awe and wonder of God's world and to develop an awareness of their place in it. All places and spaces have a history behind them shaped by humans, location, climate and politics. Geography gives us a spatial awareness of the globe and serves to form respectful attitudes that serve to remind students that we are stewards and not masters of creation.

Theological influences help to shape the cosmological understanding of the world as we recognise that we are a global community with a global interdependence, accountability, and responsibility for the common good of all people. Our stewardship must reflect our understanding that the planet is our irreplaceable home.

The intent of our Geography curriculum is to provoke curiosity and to provide answers to questions about both the natural and human aspects of the world and to encourage children to gain a better understanding of the world they live in and their place in it. We aim to give our pupils a good geographical knowledge, good enquiry skills and the ability to use simple maps and to be able to create their own, and the ability to communicate information in a variety of ways. The geographical skills the children will gain through their time at St Roses will be both progressive as well as transferable, which will stand them in good stead for the duration of their time at St Roses and into further education and beyond.

This half term children in Year 1 are learning about what the weather is like in the UK; how it changes day to day and across the seasons. They will be exploring the four seasons and looking at the different types of weather that you may experience in each one and what the most suitable items of clothing might be for each season and type of weather.

Children in Year 2 are exploring why our world is wonderful! They are exploring different natural features of the Earth, such as mountains, rivers, oceans and forests and are learning where they are located. They will be thinking about what makes these places special and how they make our world interesting and beautiful. They will also learn about why we need to look after the world and protect its natural features, so it can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Children across the school also had a great time during our around the world week, where they spent a day 'travelling' around the world to various different countries, including Antigua, Peru, Thailand, Egypt, Fiji, Finland and Switzerland. They collected stamps from each country which they put in their passports and completed an activity in each country including writing their name in hieroglyphics, chalking the northern lights, finger painting turtles and making bracelets and carnival masks.

Children were invited into school wearing colours from their own heritage or chosen country.
