Reception High Frequency Words

Homework

All children from Reception to Year 2 will be asked to read at home at least 4x a week and for this to be recorded, by parents, in their reading records.

Class teachers from reception to Year 2 will send home a list of high frequency words which should be read through and practised at least once a week.

Access to Numbots (Reception to Year 2) and Times Table Rockstars (Year 1 and Year 2) will be provided by the school so that these apps can be used to practise key maths skills at home.  This should be completed for no more than 10 mins a day and at least 3 x a week.  Class teachers may also send home harder to read and spell words, or phonics resources to help support your child.

Every half term, class teachers will create and send home a menu of activities to be completed over the course of the half term.  These will be a range of tasks and will include 1 x maths, 1 x English, 2 x Communication & Language, 2x Physical Development, 2x Personal, Social and Emotional, 1x Understanding of the World, 1x Expressive Art and Design.

These menus will be glued into a homework book and we will invite you to complete as many as you can.  You can then tick off those that you have completed and either record in the homework book what you have done.  If you have taken a photograph or would prefer to share something electronically, this can be sent through to class teachers via Google Classroom.  Each class will then allocate an afternoon where children can bring in and share some of the tasks that they have completed at home.

Weekly Learning

Drawing Club

A pizza with everything on it by Kyle Scheele

The reception children went on an adventure to discover a pizza with everything on it. The children created their own characters, considering each character's skills and the type of pizza they would make, and introduced new vocabulary, including dough, galaxy, mischievous, and addition. The children drew their own character and a scene set in a particular place of their choice, then brought their character into an adventure.

Later in the week, the children had the chance to make their own pizzas, recalling the story and the ingredients. They looked delicious!

Mr Wolf’s Pancakes by Jan Fearnley

We embarked on another adventure with Mr Wolf, asking his friends to help him cook some pancakes. During this journey, the children met well-known characters such as the three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Gingerbread Man. We discovered new vocabulary linked to our story: pancakes, slammed, dashed, recipe, and basket. The children also learned signs/actions for these key vocabulary words. Once again, the children drew their own character and a scene set in a place of their choice, then brought their character into an adventure.

After our adventure, the reception children had the opportunity to make their own pancakes. The children told us which ingredients were needed, as Mr Wolf's recipe book stated: “flour, eggs and milk”. Unlike Mr Wolf and the other characters, the children demonstrated good teamwork while making pancakes as a class.

 Reading Books

In Reception school reading books are changed weekly. Your child will be allocated a book change day. Children will receive one guided reading book and one free read that is matched to their phonic ability. If there is no comment in your child's Reading Record we will assume you have not had a chance to read with your child. Please record the text title(s) in your child's reading record.

PE

Our P.E. day is Friday. Please ensure your child wears suitable footwear that are easy for them to run in on Friday. Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings are not allowed to be worn in school at any time.

Forest School

Our Forest School day is every other  Thursday afternoon.  Please make sure your child has their forest school kit (puddle suit) and wellies in school.

RE

Spring 1 Week 6

We introduced a toy pet to the class and saying that we were going to take care of it together. The children suggested what it would need to stay alive – e.g. enough food, clean water, somewhere to sleep – lots of love and attention. We talked about how we needed the same things too and that Jesus wants us to help other people who don’t have these things.

We then watched a story about a girl who didn’t have much to eat.  We talked about that there are lots of ways that we can help people who don’t have enough food to eat. We talked about food banks and the one we had a school.

We then invited the children to draw pictures to decorate a food bank collection box for the classroom. We asked them to draw pictures of the sort of food that would be good to put in a food bank.   The then wrote or drew invitations to parents and friends to bring in an item for a class foodbank collection.

We talked about how people in other countries might not have enough to eat for other reasons.  Sometimes the weather in different parts of the world can affect how much food grows or can affect people’s ability to work.

We looked at the Mission Together’s ‘Philippines website.  We then looked at a map of the area and discussed how the islands sometimes experience big storms that destroy homes and boats. We discussed how Mission together is helping fishermen who cannot catch fish to feed the people.

We shared a prayer and invited the children to pray together for the people of the Philippines. We then invited the children to work together to write their own prayer for everyone to have enough to eat.

We also looked at Solidarity and Peace and talked about how God wants the world to be peaceful and we discussed what makes us peaceful and how we can help make the world a more peaceful place.

Spring 2 Week 1-

We talked about how it was Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday during half term. We talked about how it feels when we have not been very kind to someone or when we have done something wrong.   We talked about that Jesus is sad too, when we have been unkind or have done something wrong – but he never stops loving us and He forgives us when we are sorry.    We talked about Ash Wednesday, and we especially take time to tell Jesus that we are sorry and that we love him.  Sometimes we wear ashes in the shape of a cross on our foreheads as a sign of how much we love him and how we are sorry for making him sad.  We then invited the children to draw their own cross in charcoal and to place them on the prayer table and invite them to tell Jesus that they love him and are sorry.

We sang the 40 days song together and talked about how Lent lasts for a long time – 40 days! We made a Lent journey path.   We gave each child their own lent pebble and asked them to write their names on it and decorate it. Whilst they do this, they thought of someone or something that they were grateful for.  Each day of Lent, we are going to invite a child to add their name to the Lent journey and tell Jesus what they are thankful for in Lent.

Maths

Spring 1- Week 6

This week the children have been finding one less than a given number, differentiating between odd and even numbers and looking at the composition of the numbers 6, 7 and 8 and the different ways these numbers can be made.

Spring 2- Week 1

This week the children have been learning about doubles; we learnt how to double numbers up to 5. We then moved on to combining two groups to find a total amount.
