Reception High Frequency Words

Homework

All children from Reception to Year 2 will be asked to read at home at least 4x a week and for this to be recorded, by parents, in their reading records.

Class teachers from reception to Year 2 will send home a list of high frequency words which should be read through and practised at least once a week.

Access to Numbots (Reception to Year 2) and Times Table Rockstars (Year 1 and Year 2) will be provided by the school so that these apps can be used to practise key maths skills at home.  This should be completed for no more than 10 mins a day and at least 3 x a week.  Class teachers may also send home harder to read and spell words, or phonics resources to help support your child.

Every half term, class teachers will create and send home a menu of activities to be completed over the course of the half term.  These will be a range of tasks and will include 1 x maths, 1 x English, 2 x Communication & Language, 2x Physical Development, 2x Personal, Social and Emotional, 1x Understanding of the World, 1x Expressive Art and Design.

These menus will be glued into a homework book and we will invite you to complete as many as you can.  You can then tick off those that you have completed and either record in the homework book what you have done.  If you have taken a photograph or would prefer to share something electronically, this can be sent through to class teachers via Google Classroom.

Key Information

Reading Books

In Reception school reading books are changed weekly. Your child will be allocated a book change day. Children will receive one guided reading book and one free read that is matched to their phonic ability. If there is no comment in your child's Reading Record we will assume you have not had a chance to read with your child. Please record the text title(s) in your child's reading record.

PE

Our P.E. day is Friday. Please ensure your child wears suitable footwear that are easy for them to run in on Thursdays. Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings are not allowed to be worn in school at any time.

Forest School

Our Forest School day is every other Thursday afternoon.  Please make sure your child has their forest school kit (puddle suit) and wellies in school.

Weekly Learning

RE

 Spring 2 Week 2-

We talked about how during Lent we try to grow closer to Jesus by making time for Him in our daily lives.   We try to speak to him more through prayer.  We talked  about the time that Jesus went into the desert to pray and to get ready for his mission.  Invite the children to listen to the scripture and to watch the first 2 minutes of the ’40 Days’ video. We then thought about all the things that they saw Jesus do in the video.  The children then reflected upon special places that they might go to feel calm or quiet.  We talked about how we can sometimes feel closer to Jesus and peaceful when we are in nature – away from toys and screens and noise - just like Jesus did in the desert!

We then as a class, planted a special seed to mark the beginning of Lent. We placed the special plant on the prayer table. The children are going to care for it and watch it grow and as it grows, think about how we are growing closer to Jesus too in Lent.

We read an invitation from Jesus himself- asking them to spend some time with him this Lent, to talk to him, tell him about themselves. Or even just to sit quietly and think about him.  We then invited the children to create a special quiet tent in the classroom where they can go to spend time and talk to Jesus in Lent. We asked them what they would like in this area – a special chair, some pictures or statues of Jesus, a cross, stories about Jesus etc and the children put it in there. We introduced a special toy phone to go in the special tent and the children used it to speak to Jesus on this special phone- and knew that he always hears our prayers.

Spring 2 Week 3-

We talked about that Lent is a time to grow in love for others and we do this by caring for them and sharing what we have with them.  We listened to the story of the Good Samaritan.  We then thought about ways that we can show love for others. We talked about how Jesus wants us to grow in love and to share what we have with other people – especially in Lent.  We explored some ways that the children can show love and share what they have in their home and school lives.  The children made a quiet promise to Jesus about how they are going to try and be more loving at home and at school and placed it in a box to give them to Jesus.

We read the story ‘Giving is Better’ about Clarence the Fox. We discussed why Clarence was unhappy and how he learned how giving can make us truly happy. |We listened to the key message that Jesus wants us to care for each other too and to share what we have. We then wrote or drew a postcard to Clarence the Fox to put into his backpack – telling him all about a time that we shared something with someone else and how it made them feel.

Drawing Club

A pizza with everything on it by Kyle Scheele

The reception children went on an adventure to discover a pizza with everything on it. The children created their own characters, considering each character's skills and the type of pizza they would make, and introduced new vocabulary, including dough, galaxy, mischievous, and addition. The children drew their own character and a scene set in a particular place of their choice, then brought their character into an adventure.

Later in the week, the children had the chance to make their own pizzas, recalling the story and the ingredients. They looked delicious!

Mr Wolf’s Pancakes by Jan Fearnley

We embarked on another adventure with Mr Wolf, asking his friends to help him cook some pancakes. During this journey, the children met well-known characters such as the three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Gingerbread Man. We discovered new vocabulary linked to our story: pancakes, slammed, dashed, recipe, and basket. The children also learned signs/actions for these key vocabulary words. Once again, the children drew their own character and a scene set in a place of their choice, then brought their character into an adventure.

After our adventure, the reception children had the opportunity to make their own pancakes. The children told us which ingredients were needed, as Mr Wolf's recipe book stated: “flour, eggs and milk”. Unlike Mr Wolf and the other characters, the children demonstrated good teamwork while making pancakes as a class.
