Reception High Frequency Words

Homework

All children from Reception to Year 2 will be asked to read at home at least 4x a week and for this to be recorded, by parents, in their reading records.

Class teachers from reception to Year 2 will send home a list of high frequency words which should be read through and practised at least once a week.

Access to Numbots (Reception to Year 2) and Times Table Rockstars (Year 1 and Year 2) will be provided by the school so that these apps can be used to practise key maths skills at home.  This should be completed for no more than 10 mins a day and at least 3 x a week.  Class teachers may also send home harder to read and spell words, or phonics resources to help support your child.

Every half term, class teachers will create and send home a menu of activities to be completed over the course of the half term.  These will be a range of tasks and will include 1 x maths, 1 x English, 2 x Communication & Language, 2x Physical Development, 2x Personal, Social and Emotional, 1x Understanding of the World, 1x Expressive Art and Design.

These menus will be glued into a homework book and we will invite you to complete as many as you can.  You can then tick off those that you have completed and either record in the homework book what you have done.  If you have taken a photograph or would prefer to share something electronically, this can be sent through to class teachers via Google Classroom.  Each class will then allocate an afternoon where children can bring in and share some of the tasks that they have completed at home.

Weekly Learning

Drawing Club

Our theme for the Spring term is ‘People who help us’ and so we have linked our Drawing Club books to give us an insight on those who help us within our community. Week two, we went on a new adventure learning about Doctors, we read A superhero like you, written by Dr.Ranj. Where the children had to design a character that has superhero powers to help other people. The children enjoyed this task and also went onto drawing a setting and an adventure for their superhero. Our vocabulary for this week; superhero, scientist, air ambulance and super-cool.

In the third week, we read the Jolly postman or other people’s letters, written by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. We learnt new vocabulary linking to our story; nightingale, bungalow, letter and conjurer. The children had the opportunity to draw a character, a setting and an adventure.

 Reading Books

In Reception school reading books are changed weekly. Your child will be allocated a book change day. Children will receive one guided reading book and one free read that is matched to their phonic ability. If there is no comment in your child's Reading Record we will assume you have not had a chance to read with your child. Please record the text title(s) in your child's reading record.

PE

Our P.E. day is Friday. Please ensure your child wears suitable footwear that are easy for them to run in on Friday. Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings are not allowed to be worn in school at any time.

Forest School

Our Forest School day is every other  Thursday afternoon.  Please make sure your child has their forest school kit (puddle suit) and wellies in school.

RE

Week 2

We talked about how the Magi were happy that God had given us the baby Jesus.  We talked about how we are happy too.  We can tell God how wonderful we think he is by giving glory to him.  This means telling him how wonderful he is when we talk to him in prayers.  We then learnt to say the Glory Be together and made up hand gestures to go with the words.

We then were shown a gift and thought about what might be inside and who it might be for.  We then read the story of the Magi again and talked about the gifts that they brought and what were they and why.  We then talked about how the gift is for the whole class.  We asked how does it feel to get a gift? We talked about our gift to Jesus is doing the same as he would do for us and that is being kind to each other as he loves us all very much and wants us to love and care for each other.

Week 3

We read and talked about Mark 10: 16 Then he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on each of them, and blessed them.

We thought about how Jesus made the little children feel welcome – even when other people did not. Jesus welcomes everyone and that he wants us to welcome others too. We talked about how people make us feel welcome. We discussed ways in which they can make someone feel welcome when they visit. Saying hello, smiling, showing them around, maybe offering them drink and snacks, maybe decorating a special chair etc-

We then wrote an invitation to Mrs Swami and prepared the classroom to welcome her. We decided who will do what to make her feel welcome and special – e.g. make a banner, decorate a chair, show them around, say hello etc.

We then talked about how we can be friends with Jesus and where we can go to spend time with him. We then went on a tour of the school and found areas in the school we can be with God.  We talked about how we could improve the outdoor prayer space in EYFS and made some changes.

Week 4

We read The Feeding of the five thousand. John 6:1-14.  We talked about how Jesus noticed when the crowd was hungry and provided for them.  We talked about how it was a miracle and what a miracle was and that only God can perform them. So, Jesus is God.   We talked about how we can ask for God for help through prayer and he will provide particularly when we are in need.  We then shared bread and talked about how it feels to be hungry.  We then made baskets by weaving for our bread.

We then talked about how Jesus’s special followers were fisherman and how a fish is a Christian symbol.  We then made our own fish and collaged them.

Week 5

We shared the story of The feeding of the 5000 again with the children. We thought about how the Apostles helped with the sharing of the food and clearing up afterwards. We thought about the kind of things that the Apostles might have said to Jesus and to the hungry people to show their help and care.  The children then role-played the story, using some of the phrases.

We then shared the story of The Big Red Umbrella by Amy June Bates We then invited the children to draw a picture of themselves and wrote their names. We put all the pictures under the umbrella. We then asked them to think of some things that they could say to others in the class to make them feel included or cared for. We then decorated the umbrella with the caring phrases that the children came up.

Maths

Week  4

In Maths this week the children were exploring mass and capacity. We used the balancing scales to predict and see which objects were heavier and lighter than others. We also learnt that if the scales were balanced then the objects weighed the same. The children were then given the opportunity in active learning to weigh and compare different objects.

We also looked at capacity this week and were predicting which size and shape containers held the most liquid.

Week 5

In Maths this week we have been looking at the numbers 6,7 and 8 and different ways these can be represented. We had a go at sorting picture cards showing various representations of the numbers into the correct digit box. We have also began looking at finding one more than a given number.
